What is Dialogue in the Dark (DID) ?

Dialogue in the Dark is India’s first darkness themed empathy experience that lets you step into the shoes of a visually impaired person to experience their way of living, their challenges and most importantly, their abilities in an immersive dark exhibition format which is facilitated by the visually impaired themselves.

This role reversal brings about a radical change in the mindset of the visitors, thereby, leaving them with a view that People with Disabilities are actually not disabled but differently abled and what they need is INCLUSION leading to economically empowering opportunities and not sympathy.

Dialogue in the Dark’s mission & objective is to break the stigma, prejudices, myths, misconceptions associated with disability and promote social inclusion of PwDs. Dialogue in the Dark has been presented in more than 60 cities in India in a permanent & travelling exhibit format.

DID Express

Dialogue in the Dark Express is a versatile traveling model of Dialogue in the Dark, offering an empathy- based educational journey on Disability Diversity & Inclusion in complete darkness.
This temporary setup is designed for easy assembly and dismantling, making it suitable for various locations such as schools, colleges, corporate campuses, fairs, malls, and government meetings.

Dialogue in the Dark Express will be owned and operated by a team of 3 visually impaired individuals and 3 sighted staff from diverse identity groups (DIG) which includes marginalised women, transgender individuals, people from SC/ST community & individuals with other types of disability.

Phenomenal! Hats off to folks who do this. Empowering the blind is commendable. It personally made me realise the importance of accessibility and the first person view of what a visually impaired person really goes through on a daily basis.

This is very unique experience in my life so far. I was always curious to know the abilities of visually impaired persons and today I found and experienced that these persons are very strong. Sometimes stronger than the visual ones. I wish all the very best to Dialogue in the Dark in future endeavors.

Experiencing darkness was beautiful. I realized that how much less we use our other senses and use our senses of vision always & thereby take things for granted. What if we could use all our senses together and we can see a different world all together. I have found empathy & deep respect for differently abled person.

It was a new experience and helped me understand how world is for blind people. It also taught me the difficulties faced by others and gave me ideas on how I can help others. As a developer for Apps, it made me realise the importance of accessibility in technology & I would like to do my bit to make life easy.

It was a beautiful experience. It is amazing how beautifully blind people have become so independent & self sufficient. Inspires me to give back more to the society.

Truly amazing. I was surprised to see that I could do so much in the darkness. I thank this program and it has great potential to sensitize the world at large about the life of the visually impaired. Kudos.

Dialogue DEI Milestones

Many PwDs have been mainstreamed economically through the initiative over a span of 12 years as DID only hires Persons with Visual Impairment for conducting / facilitating it’s dark experiences.

DID experience mandated by the Commissionerate of Collegiate Education (Telangana State) – A visit to Dialogue in the Dark for all the Principals of the Government Degree Colleges.

DID – DESI (Diversity Education for Social Inclusion) Program for Schools and Colleges has been recommended by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt of India, New Delhi.

DID experience Mandated for all IAS Trainees at MCRHRD Institute, Government of Telangana and Administrative Staff College of India as an internal training program.

G.O. 27 issued by Government of unified Andhra Pradesh for promoting awareness of visually impaired – a visit to the Dialogue in the Dark (did) exhibition for all India service officers and HODs.
